To whom it may concern
This explains a dispute with Starving Students a moving company located at: 1388 Daisey, Unit A, Long Beach, CA90813.
On January 19, 2009 I called Starving Students and spoke with Scotty ???. He was told that I wished to transport a single piece of furniture weighing about 150 pounds, 4’10 wide and 6’ high from 2321 Pacific Coast Hwy., Lomita, CA to 14075 Bronte Dr., Whittier, CA 90602. This is a distance of thirty miles. He said that there would be a two hour minimum at $80 per hour and an additional charge of $25 for a total charge of $185. I specifically asked if there would any other charges; he said “No”. During this conversation my wife was also on line; she also asked questions about damage coverage.
The Starving Students truck arrived at the pickup location at 1:00 PM and left at 1:10 PM. They followed me to the destination where we arrived at 2:00 PM. They left at 2:10 PM. When the bill was presented I told them that I had been quoted a total price of $185 not the billed amount of $309.81. This disagreement was noted in writing by me on their billing statement. Immediately after the trucker’s left I noted severe damage to the right top of the furniture. This damage was not evident when placed because of the positioning of the piece.
A call was placed to Scotty ??? at 2:18 PM. A complaint was made regarding the excessive billing. He said that he could not discuss this issue; it would be necessary for me to speak with Melanie. He transferred me to her. She told me that Scotty had no authorization to give me a firm fee and that according to California law only fees submitted in writing were valid. If this is true Scotty should have told me. She also said that the damage coverage was only covered if the bill was paid in full.
The web site: losangeles.citysearch.com/review/46340 had 23 reviews by customers of Starving Students. Of these 17 identified Starving Students as “lying crooks”, “shady organization” and many other very derogatory terms. Clearly this is a disreputable business which is victimizing the customers.
